Philippe Herreweghe zu den Filmaufnahmen der Matthäus Passion in Brüssel
Recording Bach’s vocal works has always been very special to me. The sheer quality of his music produces new insights every time one deals with it. The Matthäus-Passion is of course a true and so to speak ‘sacred’ masterpiece. I admit I was at first reluctant to record some of its highlights for the use of a soundtrack in PASSION, Christian Labhart’s newest Cinema documentary. But his personality and work as a film maker however convinced me and the singers and players of Collegium Vocale Gent in no time. The musicians were filmed with six camera’s and recorded by our usual Tritonus sound engineers wich guarantees the highest standards for both sound and image. The extraordinary setting of the Tour & Taxis building in my hometown Brussels did the rest by creating a very honest and human atmosphere in which the music was lifted as I rarely experienced before.
